Taken during various trips away from the city, Chinese artist Chen Zhuo’s photobook “The Landscape” presents the viewer with carefully observed, rectangular cut-outs of reality that take on an almost fantastical quality.

Chen, who left his small birth town at the age of 15 to study and live on his own, always found it very difficult to integrate into city life and felt a sense of distance to his surroundings. Chen has always been attracted to hidden realities contained in corners of ordinary landscapes. His images give shape to the large developmental and cultural gap between China’s cities and its rural areas.
